This Week’s Learning!

What a busy week we have had in Primary 4! The children have come back full of enthusiasm and are raring to get busy with their learning!

In Literacy we have been working on lots of different targets. Firstly we have been learning to make connections with our reading books – these involve text to self, text to text and text to world connections. Making connections gives the children a deeper understanding of the books they are reading. In writing we have been using common conjunctions to join two sentences together. We spent some time today writing an amazing Halloween story where we tried hard to use conjunctions, paragraphs, amazing vocabulary and correct punctuation.

In numeracy we have all been working on addition, either with 2 or 3 digit numbers. All addition that we are doing at the moment is mental addition and the children are learning different strategies to do the sums in their heads.

In PE we have been doing gymnastics – balancing by ourselves and with partners, and different kinds of jumps and rolls.

In IDL we have been learning what plants need in order to grow and develop.

This week we also started our new class novel “The Boy in the Dress” which is already proving to be very thought provoking!

Welcome Back!

It was lovely to have all my children back today smiling and full of exciting stories from their holidays. They started the day off with a bang when we went straight into the learning the story of the Papaya that spoke! Lots of fun and laughs!

We have a very busy term ahead of us. Swimming starts in 2 weeks – please make sure you have returned the permission slip. If you have lost the slip ask me for another one. I will be in touch regarding helpers for swimming.

The Halloween disco is on Friday night – all children received a letter about this. This needs to be returned before Friday.

Please ensure your child brings in their homework pack/bag to school each day as we use spelling words etc on a daily basis.

PE will continue on a Wednesday and a Friday morning. Please send your child to school in their gym kit with their school uniform in their school bag.

Thank you.

Open Afternoon

A big thank you to all our friendly visitors to P4 today! It was so lovely to see you interacting with your children and seeing their enthusiasm at sharing their learning. A huge thank you for all your positive comments about the children’s learning and our classroom. I look forward to meeting everyone properly at parents eve in November!

This Week’s Learning

In literacy this week we have been learning to offer our own ideas about the characters. We have also been learning to use adjectives in our writing and to identify them in our reading books. We are continuing our work with capital letters and full stops – lots of us are still forgetting to use them consistently!

In numeracy and maths this week we have continued our topic of numbers to 1000/10000. We have been skip counting and estimating and rounding to the nearest 10/100/1000. We have also been learning to create our own bar graphs.

In IDL we have been investigating energy. We are beginning to identify different kinds of energy and show their importance in every day life. We also used some amazing technology and problem solving skills and made our own wind turbines.

My P4’s are full of Energy!

This week in our class we have been learning about different kinds of energy. We have been designing our own wind turbines and and have started building them. I am super impressed by our amazing problem solving skills and our ability to follow a plan carefully! Fantastic learning Primary 4! There is a wee video on our Facebook page as well which you might want to have a peek at!

This Week’s Learning

In reading this week we have been learning to offer our own ideas about the story setting. Using our reading books we have been identifying where the story is set and trying to find specific words the author has used to describe the setting. We have also been learning to ask and answer questions to deepen our understanding of what the story is about.

For listening and talking this week we have been having a good chat about verbal and non verbal techniques when engaging with others – eye contact, expression and body language. The children are being encouraged to engage with others in the morning by saying good morning and by using eye contact as often as possible.

In maths we have been learning place value of numbers to 1000 and 10000 for some.

We have started work on this term’s topic, A Bug’s Life, and we have been learning about living and non living things.

In health and well-being we are learning to become more independent. The children are being encouraged to stand in the lines independently – so mums/dads/grannies/grandpas please feel free to leave your child and head off to enjoy your day! The children are also being encouraged to listen carefully to messages to take home and pass on – as the children are now in Primary 4 lots of information will be passed on this way rather than posted on the blog so it would be great if you could encourage your child to share what they know.
